W & M nab the big NAB

It’s always good to see Kiwis doing well overseas and architecture firm Warren and Mahoney is at it again, this time nabbing the contract to redesign the National Australia Bank (NAB) network of banks — all 760 of them. It'll be joined in its efforts by fellow Kiwi co-conspirators DNA.

It’s Hummer Time

With fuel prices sky rocketing, the petrol-guzzling Hummer’s days have been numbered  for some time now and, when GM announced last year it was closing its Hummer operations down, the fate of the vehicle was sealed. So what to do with all that clunky Hummer material? Rather than it wind up in a scrap metal yard somewhere, two architects from a Los Angeles-based firm have proposed a novel and yet very practical solution: turn them into houses, of course.

Check your ego at the door, says Architecture for Humanity founder Cameron Sinclair

Each year 25,000 people benefit directly from its building initiatives. It has 75 chapters in 25 countries and elicits the help of more than 4,650 volunteer design professionals. At a recent lecture in Auckland, founder of charitable organisation Architecture for Humanity Cameron Sinclair shared exactly how his organisation has grown from a one-man show to one with massive global outreach. He also offered some words of advice for the Christchurch rebuild.

It’s what’s on the inside that (also) counts

From the outside, the Meridian First Light house is a thing of wooden beauty. Cast your eyes skyward and you’ll see the solar panels on top, immediately alluding to the house’s energy savvy principals. But what about what’s on the inside? In its latest blog, the First Light team explains how the the challenge of limited space brought out the team’s crafty and innovative streak.

Age has nothing to do with energy saving

Proving that even the oldest of buildings can make energy efficient gains, New Zealand’s first museum has also become the first in the world to gain CEMARS certification. Auckland Museum, which was established in 1852, has cut its electricity use by six percent in the past year, all with the help of some basic technology improvements.

Solar plastic bottle lamps provide lighting solution in Manila slums

And speaking of saving energy, skylights are a great way to provide natural internal lighting, but installing them is expensive and, if you live in the slums of Manila, you’d think it impossible. Not so. A group of innovative MIT students has found a solution by way of some old soft drink bottles.

Researchers delve into design behind Rome’s famed Pantheon

It may have been around for 2000 years, but in all that time the purpose behind the Pantheon’s unusual design has never quite been understood, until now perhaps. Two researchers, including one from New Zealand, say the design might well have served as a sun dial, positioned to illuminate the building entrance just as the emperor was walking in. The Telegraph’s Nick Squires explains.

A birth certificate shows you were born.
A death certificate shows you have died.

Every month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month…….

Give this heart to everyone you don't want to
lose in '2011 including me if you care.

Try to collect 12, it's not easy!

June Meeting Update

June Meeting: Thursday 30th June

June Meeting Workshop: How to write a non-fiction book in 48hrs or less!
Presented by Lawrence Green

Have you ever wanted to write a book?
Would you like to be able to do so quickly and easily?

People who set out to write non-fiction, usually do so for one of three reasons: to help others, to position themselves as experts, or because it is just something that they have always wanted to do.

These are all worthy goals, but unfortunately, many people who start the authors' journey never make it to the finish; and as a result, many potentially great books never see the light of day.  And when this happens, the world is a poorer place.

The good news is that suffering and writing a book do not need to go together. It is not writing that is difficult, it is the fact that we have been taught to write in a way that makes it so.

In this workshop you will discover:

- The Book Completion Roadmap - the simple steps for completing a first draft of your book in 48hrs or less;
- The Fast Writing Mindset - how to write more quickly and easily without struggle or 'writers angst'.
- The Power of Focus - how to map out your new book clearly in terms of purpose, impact and structure in order to create the foundation for speed.
- Quick Fire Creation - how to harness the power of personal relationships and technology to put your writing process on 'steroids'.

Lawrence is the founder of Leader Greatness Ltd. and a specialist in helping leaders and entrepreneurs to bridge the gap between where they are now and where they want to be.   He is a thought leader in the areas of creative, inspirational and entrepreneurial leadership and the author of six books including The Kiwi Effect, The Lazy CEO, and Start Your Business Now.

Lawrence brings a diverse range of perspectives to his work including his early years as a sport psychology consultant; 10 years as a postgraduate management lecturer; 15 years as a leadership specialist and business mentor; and the hard-won lessons learned from leading his own entrepreneurial and social change initiatives.

Using this experience, Lawrence provides executive coaching and training to senior leaders and entrepreneurs; and his number one objective is to enable leaders and entrepreneurs to liberate their potential for achieving breathtaking results.

Art Deco took its name from the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, an exhibition held in Paris in 1925, although even before the First World War avant garde designers were producing one-off pieces that would be later classified as Art Deco.
